Are you interested in getting a Medical Marijuana Card in Colorado? Medical Marijuana patients in Colorado enjoy special privileges over Recreational customers. Recreational marijuana sales are subject to a 30% excise and sales tax, a cost most stores will pass on to the customer. Medical patients have higher purchase limits and may purchase stronger and specially-available products. Medical patients also enjoy additional legal protections, including continued rights and access to cannabis medicine while serving probationary terms and for better protections with employment.

To register as a Medical Marijuana patient, you must receive a doctor’s recommendation for marijuana, and register on the state patient registry. The Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry (MMR) is a confidential, statewide program managed by the CDPHE (Colorado Department of Health). There are special guidelines for children, caregivers, and legal guardians (see CDPHE’s faq section), but let’s review the basic process for Colorado adults:

who is eligible for an Medical card?

You must be 18 years or older and a Colorado resident. You can prove residency with a Colorado driver’s license or ID, and you must have a valid Social Security number. Colorado does not recognize Medical Marijuana cards issued in other states (but you can use your Colorado Medical card in a few other states).

What conditions qualify for a doctor’s recommendation for medical cannabis use?

If you experience any of the following conditions, you may qualify for a doctor’s recommendation:

  • Severe pain

  • Severe nausea

  • Persistent muscle spasms

  • Seizures

  • Cachexia, or wasting syndrome (severe weight loss caused by a medical condition or its treatment)

  • Cancer

  • Glaucoma

  • HIV or AIDS

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Which medical professions can write a recommendation for a medical marijuana card in Colorado?

Your physician must meet the following requirements to recommend medical marijuana:

  • Only a MD or a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) can write recommendations.

  • A doctor must be in good standing and licensed to practice in Colorado.

  • Must be registered to submit certifications online.

  • If you or your physician is not online, they must provide you with a paper copy of your medical marijuana certification.

how do i submit my recommendation to the health department? How do i print my Medical Marijuana Card through the online portal?

Once you have a doctor’s recommendation, you will need to register with the Colorado Health Department (CDPHE), at cdphe.colorado.gov/medical-marijuana-registry-patients. The first time you apply to the registry site, you’ll need to create an account using your private email address. Create a password and a user name, and click “new patient registration” to fill out a short application for the first time applying or renewing online.

  1. Step One- fill in your personal information.

  2. Step Two- select a cultivation choice (purchase from a medical marijuana dispensary, grow your own, split growing with a dispensary or caregiver, etc.) If you have a Caregiver, you will need to fill in all your Caregiver’s information in this section as well.

  3. Part Three- Sign the application. If you’re a parent or legal representative applying for a child, or a legal representative applying for an adult, you fill out the third page.

Make sure to complete all the required fields, or the online system will not let you move forward. Your application will not be processed if it is not complete. You will have to make payment to submit your application ($29.50 is the fee as of February 2022). After your application is accepted online, you can expect to receive an email notifying you of your approval within 1–3 business days. You can also submit a paper form, but please note, it can take up to 8 weeks for them to process mail-in applications. If you choose to submit online, simply print a copy of your card and bring it to your favorite Medical dispensary (which is probably Confidential Cannabis).

It’s ok to print your card on regular printer paper. Your card’s issue and expiration dates are based on the day your application is approved. Make sure to bring a valid ID and your MMR card when you visit the dispensary. If you have an exception for Daily Sales Limits, make sure you bring your Physician’s Certification Form AND the Uniform Certification Form (which must be filled out by your doctor).

What is the uniform certification form?

The Uniform Certification Form is different than the Physician Certification Form, it is a new document available for Medical patients to begin utilizing in 2022. The UC Form will now be required when renewing your Medical card for all patients with exceptions from Daily Sales Limits. The UC Form is not required for most medical patients to shop. The form is designed for certain Medical patients to have better access to medicine. Patients with an address outside of Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Denver, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, or Pueblo AND also don’t have access to a medical dispensaries in their County may want to file a UC Form. Also patients who lack transportation or access to public transportation to a medical dispensary may consider the UC Form. Please ask you doctor if the UC Form is appropriate for you.

what is the cost for a medical marijuana card?

The fee to the registry is $29.50 (see above), plus the fee your doctor charges for a consultation visit. In Colorado Springs, a doctor’s consultation visit is usually $75-$100. Some doctors offer discount pricing for employees who work in the cannabis Industry. If you’re interested in finding out how much you may be charged for a standard 6 plant count, please contact our friends at Doctors of Natural Medicine.
